Frequently Asked Questions
About our language courses
Which languages can I learn at NiCHiRaN?
At NiCHiRaN, you can learn Japanese, Dutch and English. Our Dutch and English courses are mainly aimed at Japanese-speaking learners, such as expats and people living or working in the Netherlands.
Depending on the language, level and your personal learning goals, we offer both group courses and private lessons.
What levels do you offer?
We offer courses from beginner to advanced level. If you are not sure which level is right for you, we are happy to help you find a course that matches your current level and learning goals.
I am a complete beginner. Can I join a course?
Absolutely! You don’t need any prior knowledge to join our beginner courses. We build your language skills step by step, focusing on vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation, but above all on actually using the language.
How do I know what my level is?
If you already have some knowledge of the language, we can determine your level during an intake and level assessment. You can also take an online level test yourself.
This helps us make sure you join a group that matches your level.
About our lessons
Are the lessons online or face-to-face?
Our lessons are mainly taught online. Depending on the course, we use Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.
Online learning at NiCHiRaN is not about simply sitting in front of a screen. Our lessons are interactive, and you get plenty of opportunities to speak, ask questions and practise the language.
How large are the groups?
We deliberately keep our groups small. There is a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 10 participants.
This gives you plenty of opportunities for personal attention, questions and active speaking practice.
How long is a lesson?
The length of a lesson depends on the course. Many lessons are 60 or 90 minutes. The exact lesson duration is listed with each course in our course overview.
How often do I have lessons?
Group courses take place at a fixed weekly time. You can find the day and time of each course on our website.
For private lessons, we can agree on a schedule and frequency that suit your availability and learning goals.
Will I get homework?
Usually, yes. Homework helps you review what you have learned and practise the language outside the classroom.
We believe that regular practice is important, while of course taking your level and available time into account.
What happens if I miss a group lesson?
If you are unable to attend a lesson, please let us know as soon as possible.
We will do our best to record the lesson so that you can watch it afterwards and keep up with the material.
Registration and levels
Can I meet you before I register?
Of course! If you are unsure about your level, which course to choose or our teaching approach, please get in touch.
We are happy to tell you more about our courses and help you find the option that suits you best.
Can I join a course after it has already started?
For some courses, joining after the start date is possible, for example if you already have the required prior knowledge.
Get in touch with us and we will be happy to discuss the possibilities.
Can I take a course for a specific purpose?
Absolutely! We can tailor lessons to different learning goals, such as:
- learning Japanese for a trip or longer stay in Japan
- learning Survival Dutch for everyday life in the Netherlands
- learning Dutch or English for work
- preparing for an exam
- improving your grammar
- improving your speaking skills
- becoming more confident speaking the language
We also offer specific courses such as Japanese for Travel and conversation courses.
Private lessons
Do you offer private lessons?
Yes, we do! We offer individual Japanese, Dutch and English lessons.
Private lessons are tailored to your level, learning goals and availability. Before we start, we have an intake meeting of approximately 30 minutes to discuss your needs and expectations.
Can I learn a language if I don’t have much time?
Definitely! Private lessons are particularly flexible.
Together, we can find a lesson frequency that fits your schedule and helps you achieve your learning goals.
Can I cancel a private lesson?
Yes. Our cancellation policy also applies to private lessons.
You can cancel a lesson free of charge if you let us know at least 48 hours in advance. If you cancel later, the lesson will be charged.
Fees and course materials
How much does a course cost?
The price depends on the type of course, lesson duration and number of participants.
You can find our current prices in the course overview.
Are books and course materials included?
Textbooks are not included in the course fee.
If a textbook is required, we can order it for you, so that you have the correct materials when your course starts.
For companies
Do you provide language training for companies?
Yes. NiCHiRaN also provides language training for companies and their employees.
The content, frequency and duration of the training can be tailored to your organisation’s needs. For example, we provide Japanese training for employees working with Japanese colleagues or clients, as well as Dutch and English training for international employees.
